About this Install Guide

This guide shows you how to install and use the tool with the most common configuration. For advanced options and complete reference information, see the official documentation. Some install guides also include optional next steps to help you explore related workflows or integrations.

libjpeg-turbo is a JPEG image codec that uses single instruction, multiple data (SIMD) instructions to accelerate JPEG encoding and decoding. It provides libraries and command-line tools, including cjpeg for encoding, djpeg for decoding, and jpegtran for transforming JPEG images.

You can install the tools on macOS on Apple silicon, 64-bit Arm Linux, or Windows on Arm. Package-manager commands on macOS and Linux install the version available from your package source.

Install on macOS

Install Homebrew if it isn’t already available, then install the jpeg-turbo package :

brew install jpeg-turbo

Install on Arm Linux

Use the commands for your Linux distribution.

On Ubuntu and Debian, install the libjpeg-turbo-progs package:

sudo apt update
sudo apt install libjpeg-turbo-progs

On Fedora, install the libjpeg-turbo-utils package :

sudo dnf install libjpeg-turbo-utils

Both packages provide jpegtran and the other command-line tools. Installing only the JPEG runtime library doesn’t provide these tools.

Install on Windows on Arm

Note

The following steps use libjpeg-turbo version 3.1.4.1. You can use another version that provides an ARM64 installer. Replace the installer with the file for your chosen version. To find the latest version, see libjpeg-turbo releases .

  1. Download libjpeg-turbo-3.1.4.1-vc-arm64.exe from the libjpeg-turbo 3.1.4.1 release .
  2. Run the installer and note the installation directory.
  3. Open the installation directory in File Explorer.
  4. Open the bin folder and confirm that it contains jpegtran.exe.
  5. Copy the full path to the bin folder from the address bar.
  6. Search the Start menu for Edit environment variables for your account and open it.
  7. Under User variables, select Path, then select Edit > New.
  8. Paste the path to the bin folder, then select OK to save and close the dialogs.
  9. Open a new PowerShell window to use the updated Path.

Verify the installation

In your terminal, or PowerShell on Windows, print the installed version:

jpegtran -version

The output is similar to:

        libjpeg-turbo version 3.1.4.1 (build 20260327)

Your version and build can differ. A successful version check confirms that your terminal can find and run jpegtran.

Troubleshoot installation issues

If your shell can’t find jpegtran, open a new terminal. Confirm that the directory containing the executable is in your PATH. On Windows, check for jpegtran.exe in the bin directory of the installation. On Linux, check that you installed the command-line tools package for your distribution.

If Ubuntu can’t locate the package, check that the universe repository is enabled for your release. Then, run sudo apt update again.

Next steps

You can now encode, decode, and transform JPEG images on Arm using libjpeg-turbo.
